MILWAUKEE AREA DOMESTIC ANIMAL CONTROL COMMISSION (MADACC)
VETERINARIAN / MEDICAL DIRECTOR
SUMMARY:
The Veterinarian is responsible for providing leadership and direction for managing and supervising the medical department including protocols of the shelter and vet technician/assistant staff. This person is responsible for carrying out the philosophy and policies of the organization, ensuring constant humane care and treatment of sheltered animals, and providing guidance to the Executive Director and the Commission on animal medical issues as needed. Oversees daily animal medical care, maintenance of preventative health programs and animal sterilization. Provides staff training, prepares operational reports and educates the public about responsible pet ownership and animal regulations and laws.
SCOPE:
Reports to: Executive Director
Supervises: Veterinary technician/assistants
Independently performs work of a regular and recurring nature in accordance with MADACC procedures and policies. Plans and prioritizes the work of assigned staff.
RESPONSILITIES:
- Responsible for the supervision and scheduling of veterinary technicians/assistants, providing regular, on-going feedback and timely evaluations. Participates in personnel actions (hiring, discipline, et al) in coordination with Executive Director. Trains new staff providing for their growth and safety.
- Develops and enforces compliance with standard operating procedures for animal medical and health operations.
- Conducts and evaluates treatment plans, disease control measures, hands-on medical treatment and progress of animals housed at the shelter, including sterilization and facility sanitation within MADACC guidelines and operating philosophy.
- Assists Milwaukee County law enforcement personnel on investigations involving animals including performing necropsies, animal medical reports and court testimonies.
- Provides rabies quarantine observations and rabies vaccine administrations for MADACC animals and public animals.
- Maintains shelter disease control program in cooperation with Shelter Supervisor.
- Conducts and monitors medical and euthanization program procedures, recommends changes as appropriate in cooperation with Shelter Supervisor.
- Maintains proper inventory, storage, handling and documentation of all substances, supplies and functioning of all medically related equipment within the department. Maintains DEA permits and State of WI Special Use Authorization.
- Assists with internal and public consultation and educational services when appropriate.
- Performs spay/neuter surgeries, including some animal preparation and aftercare as appropriate.
- Maintains animal medical and sterilization records and care recommendations for all MADACC animal admissions and ensure those recommendations are completed.
- Examines, diagnoses, treats and provides consultation when necessary for MADACC animal admissions.
- Evaluates and schedules maintenance for surgical facilities and equipment in cooperation with Operations Manager.
- Works evenings, weekends and/or holidays as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree required with appropriate work experience in a like position, animal shelter medical experience preferred
- Valid State of Wisconsin License by Veterinary Exam Board
- Federal Accreditation required
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills essential.
- Good human relations skills in dealing with the public
- Supervisory experience
- Basic computer skills

The employee must occasionally lift, pull, push and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
