SHELTER SUPERVISOR
 

 

SUMMARY:

The Shelter Supervisor is responsible for providing leadership and direction for managing and supervising the operation of the shelter and shelter staff.  This person is responsible for carrying out the philosophy and policies of the organization, ensuring constant humane care and treatment of sheltered animals, managing the expenses and resources of the shelter, and providing guidance to the Executive Director and the Commission on animal care issues as needed.  Oversees animal custodial and remedial care, admissions, adoptions, transfers and euthanasia. The individual in this position also oversees the volunteer program along with ensuring the safety, sanitation and upkeep of MADACC’s facility.  Provides staff training, prepares operational reports and educates the public about responsible pet ownership and animal regulations and laws. 

SCOPE:

Reports to: Executive Director

Supervises: Animal Care Attendants and Volunteer Coordinator.
Independently performs work of a regular and recurring nature in accordance with MADACC procedures and policies. Plans and prioritizes the work of assigned staff.

RESPONSILITIES:

  • Responsible for the supervision and scheduling of Animal Care Attendants and Volunteer Coordinator, providing regular, on-going feedback and timely evaluations.  Participates in personnel actions (hiring, discipline, et al) in coordination with the Executive Director.  Trains new staff providing for their growth and safety.  Makes daily inspection of shelter to ensure work is accomplished, animals are cared for and facility is sanitary.
  • Develops standard operating procedures to ensure maximum animal housing sanitation, physical and emotional comfort of animals, including proper food, water, exercise, medical care and protection from stress and anxiety.
  • Adjusts working hours and duties of animal care staff to stay within budget to maintain the most efficient and economical operation of the shelter.
  • Monitors the general health of shelter animals and ensures proper referral to medical care when necessary.  Makes daily evaluation list and euthanasia list.  Supervises euthanasia to ensure proper techniques are used.  Works cooperatively with veterinarian regarding specific animals and ensures veterinary instructions are carried out.
  • Works directly with veterinarian to maintain shelter disease control programs.
  • Oversees animal dispositions including redemptions, safe keeps, transfers, adoption selection, foster candidates and animals to be euthanized
  • Conducts and participates in meetings with shelter staff to review procedures, discuss workplace issues and share ideas to improve animal care.  Meets with Executive Director to develop long-range programs and regularly review policies and procedures.
  • Oversees transfer program.  Works directly with Program Coordinator on foster care, adoption and spay/neuter program.
  • Works directly with Animal Behavior Evaluators conducting animal evaluations for disposition.
  • Supervises volunteer program.
  • Maintains numerous files, records and statistics that include but are not limited to: animal population, transfer, adoption, euthanasia, spay and neuter, incident and personnel data.  Works cooperatively with veterinarian to maintain controlled substance records and renew license yearly.  Prepares all worker assignments, schedules and rosters.  Reviews timesheets and approves overtime. 
  • Orders supplies and proposes necessary new of replacement equipment. Establishes budget limits for purchase of materials. Secures and has on hand adequate supplies and equipment for all shelter operations while adhering to budget guidelines.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions to Operations Manager or repairs equipment as needed. Works cooperatively with Operations Manager to address equipment and shelter upgrades.
  • Oversees management of maintaining a safe and sanitary facility for animals and people.  Assures all animals’ nutrition and housing needs are being met.
  • Grow, strengthen, and maintain cooperative relationships with animal welfare organizations and other community agencies and organizations.
  • Attend weekly management meetings, reporting on shelter activity.  Attend Board meetings as needed.
  • Attends continuing education opportunities to ensure MADACC meets or exceeds current industry standards in animal welfare and husbandry. Strives to remain current on animal care and control issues.
  • Performs other related duties as required. Supervises additional programs and projects as requested.
  • Works evenings, weekends and/or holidays as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s Degree required.  Minimum of two years experience working in the animal care field; supervisory experience highly preferred.
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication shills essential.
  • Strong human relations skills in dealing with the public; experience working with volunteers highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of animal health and well being to include nutritional needs, resources for information, knowledge of common animal diseases and behavior issues.  Ability to identify signs of animal illnesses, behavior issues, and injuries.
  • Demonstrated program management knowledge to include basic statistical methods, fiscal and budgeting practices and procedures highly desired.
  • Strong computer skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk on a variety of surfaces, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

The employee must occasionally lift, pull, push and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
