MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Complete and maintain medical records, controlled substance log sheets, intake listings, and any other necessary paperwork and reports; accurately relay medical information to owners redeeming animals with such a condition; effectively administer vaccinations using a syringe both intranasal and subcutaneous; accurately perform necessary calculations for medicines, tranquilizers, and euthanasia solution on a daily basis; learn to read fecal flotation’s to determine parasite infestation; be able to follow instructions given by the staff Veterinarian, perform simple medical treatments such as cleaning and wrapping wounds, and assist with spay/neuter and other minor surgical procedures; perform basic husbandry for cats, dogs, rabbits, reptiles, birds and small animals; learn to use and clean out on-site incinerators; become effective in the use of animal control equipment; interact with other area shelter workers, breed rescue personnel, and the public in a professional and compassionate manner.
MAJOR QUALIFICATIONS & ABILITIES
Candidates for the position of Veterinary Technician/Assistant must meet the following minimum requirements; possess Certification as a Veterinary Technician from the state of Wisconsin; some animal handling experience; knowledge of basic animal breeds primarily, but not limited to, canines and felines; be able to learn how to recognize common medical conditions in animals; have knowledge of what euthanasia is and be able to handle routine euthanasia; maintain a professional demeanor at all times during the scheduled workday; be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds; have a strong initiative with excellent organizational skills; must be able to multitask; a thorough understanding and dedication of the philosophies of animal welfare; ability to work a varied schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary for this position will be discussed at time of interview. Benefits include vacation and sick leave earned on an accrued basis for full time employees and paid holidays.
